Dual-Band Router Configuration for Smart Devices

Configure your dual-band router to work properly with smart home devices.

Dual-band routers broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. Here's how to configure them for smart devices.

Why Configuration Matters

Most smart devices only support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. If your phone is connected to 5GHz during setup, the device may fail to connect.

Recommended Configuration

Option 1: Separate Network Names

Set different names for each frequency band:

  • "HomeNetwork_2.4G" for 2.4GHz
  • "HomeNetwork_5G" for 5GHz

Option 2: Disable Band Steering

If your router uses band steering (same name for both frequencies):

  1. Access router settings
  2. Disable band steering or smart connect
  3. Configure separate SSIDs for each band

During Device Setup

  1. Connect your phone to the 2.4GHz network
  2. Start the device pairing process
  3. Complete setup using the 2.4GHz connection
