Router IP Address Capacity
Understanding your router's IP address allocation and how it affects device connections.
Your router assigns IP addresses to connected devices through DHCP. Understanding this helps manage your network.
DHCP Basics
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) automatically assigns IP addresses to devices when they connect.
Default IP Range
Most home routers use:
- Range: 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254
- Available addresses: ~250 devices
Common Issues
IP Address Exhaustion
If all IP addresses are in use, new devices can't connect.
IP Conflicts
Two devices with the same IP address cause connectivity issues.
Solutions
- Increase DHCP range in router settings
- Reduce lease time to recycle unused addresses faster
- Use static IPs for critical devices
- Restart router to clear old allocations
